6th LADIESFUND Women’s Awards 2014 for Pakistan


Anita Zafar and Akbari Juman Honoured at 6th LADIESFUND Women’s Awards for Pakistan 2014


Karachi : The Dawood Global Foundation, the 6th LADIESFUND® Women’s Awards for Pakistan 2014 ceremony was held at The Mohatta Palace Museum, Karachi, with 400 of the most influential women in Pakistan in attendance. Chief Guests were the Rubina S. Qaimkhani, Minister Women Development, Social Welfare, & Special Education, of Sindh, as well as the two Lifetime Achievement Award winners Dr. Nafis Sadik (UNAIDS) and Souriya Anwar (SOS Children’s Villages). The event began with a surprise Indonesian Cultural Dance of Welcome, arranged by The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Karachi .

Key winners included the awarding of the Khushhalibank Idol Award to Anita Zafar and Akbari Juman, who were murdered recently while trying to administer polio vaccines. Their spouses and children accepted the Awards in heartfelt and tearful moment.

The People’s Choice winners included Samina Baig who was Pakistan Woman of the Year, Angie Marshall who was Momentum Award winner and Khalida Brohi who was the Trailblazer Award winner. Voting was done through CityFM89, 22-FOUR, textualy and the Dawood Global Foundation and LADIESFUND sites. All winners received a plaque, a LADIESFUND membership card, an Artel by Bina Ali piece of jewelry, a silver piece by Uzma Javeri, a U&I by Aneesa Unus luxury clutch, a gift basket from Cosmo Group and a bouquet of flowers from Zerritta Flowers. In addition, all People’s Choice Winners received a Tapulicious by Tapu Javeri coffee table book.

Honoured posthumously with LADIESFUND® Awards of Courage were Parveen Rehman and Zahra Shahid Hussain, with emotional acceptances on the part of their families.

Special commendations were presented to incredible women in Fashion (Deena Rehman, Shamsha Hashwani and Nadia Elahi), Medicine (Dr. Rufina Soomro, Dr. Shaista Khan and Dr. Tasneem Ahsan), Art (Seema Nusrat, Raania Durrani and Sumbul Khan) and Performance (Sanam Saeed). Jury members included Amin Gulgee, Tapu Javeri, Zahir Rahimtoola and Dr. Fadieleh Sohail.

A surprise cheque of PKR 200,000 was presented to Souriya Anwar for SOS Children’s Villages by Dawood Global Foundation President Tara Uzra Dawood. This was part of the BABYFUND® Teddy Bear campaign for orphans. A new BABYFUND® Teddy Bear campaign in partnership with Make a Wish Foundation Pakistan was also announced.

The LADIESFUND® International Fellowship to World Business Dialogue Germany winner was Sindhiya Kirshan of IBA (presented by LADIESFUND® Advisory Council Saad Khan) and LADIESFUND® Musical Scholarship was presented to Alycia Dias, covering her tuition in Business Administration at Iqra University to ensure she is trained in managing her success. LADIESFUND® Zein Obagi Scholarship in Fashion Design (AFID) was won by Yusra Tufail and presented by Roohi Sayeed. Scholarships for National Bonds winner Maheen Khan, Raintree Spa winner Haniyah Sheikh, Skin Medica Scholarship winner Kainat Muhammad Chuttal and Nadia Ellahi winner Eman were renewed and all six scholars next year’s tuitions to Iqra University were handed to Iqra University on stage.

Thirteen Educate a Girl vocational scholarships in media studies at the Institute of Journalism were presented to Sidra Zafar, Heba Siddique, Hafsa Siddique, Warshi Devi, Shafaq Noor, Anees Zehra, Javeria Saleem, Aqsa Tanvir, Dania Nafees, Hiba Hussain, Komal Bai, Shafiqa Yar Baig and Urooj Riaz with cheques given to Harys Khan, CEO, Institute of Journalism on stage. Donors Parveen Kanji, Shelina Junejo, Hina Farid, Saniha Jafri were among those present to meet their named scholars. This is part of LADIESFUND’s mission to educate 1000 girls in Pakistan. 130 scholarships have been funded to date. Fundraising Chair Nazneen Tariq Khan stated, “This process of one donor, one girl is absolutely transparent and it is a great honour and joy being in charge of this initiative.”


The ceremony was compered by Faisal Qureshi and began with a Recitation of the Aytul Qursi by Talat Hashimi and thereafter the National Anthem led by Alycia Dias. This was followed by a Welcome Speech by Dawood Global Foundation President and LADIESFUND Founder Tara Uzra Dawood, who spoke of the journey of the platform to this 6th Anniversary celebration.

It was attended by British Deputy High Commissioner John Tucknott, Indonesian Consul General Rossalis Adenan, Acting US Consul General “Skip” Waskin, Zeenat Rashid, Nadia Hussein, Amin Gulgee, Qader Jaffer, Jamila Habib, Javed Jabbar, Ameena Saiyid, Nadya Mistry, Syed Haider, Sabera Tapal, Timmy Zardari, Frieha Altaf, Nilofer Saeed, Sister Ruth of Darul Sukun, Arooj Mumtaz (Captain Pakistan’s Women’s Cricket Team), among others.
