Malacca, Malaysian: The first International Women’s Day was held in 1911. Since that day, thousands of events occur to promote the economic, political and social achievements of women. Over the years, March 8th marks the celebration of the International Women’s Day, an annual event to promote the achievements of women worldwide and to support the advancement of women and their struggle for equality.
This Day aims to highlight the importance of creating conditions for the elimination of discrimination against women as well as recognition for their full and equal participation in social development. Besides, the International Women’s Day is also an opportunity to call for change and to celebrate the acts of courage and determination shown by the ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and societies.
As for the year 2015, the theme for International Women’s Day, “Empowering Women – Empowering Humanity: Picture It!” envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices as well as her rights responsibly; these include the choices and rights of participating in politics, getting the right education, having an adequate income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination.
In this year, International Women’s Day will focus on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a historic roadmap signed by 189 governments twenty years ago that sets the agenda for realizing women’s rights. While there have been many achievements since then, many serious gaps remain. This is the time to uphold women’s achievements, recognize challenges, and focus on the greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality to mobilize all people to contribute and play their part.
Towards such efforts, we, at the World Assembly of Youth (WAY), continue to contribute in the global innovative efforts in encouraging the embracement of gender equality in all levels of society. In line with this year theme, we urge young women to work and realize their potential as part of a gender neutral society. Therefore, let us work in unity towards attaining gender equality. Change starts from and within you!
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY!
