Japanese investors subject to IMF report on Pakistan

KARACHI: Japan may consider funding of the $2.5 billion Karachi Circular Railway but is waiting for the IMF’s final approval of the second review, which will be the green signal for Japan. This was said by Japan’s Ambassador to Pakistan Mr Hiroshi Inomata at a press briefing.

The Japanese envoy said his country fully supported Pakistan’s efforts to improve trade ties with India and said liberal trade relations was the key to prosperity of this region which was home to a fifth of humanity.

Mr Inomata added that Japan looked for greater cooperation in agriculture, food energy sectors and infrastructure projects, and Japanese investors were waiting for the right conditions to invest.

The annual general meeting of the Pakistan Japan Business Forum (PJBF) was held earlier and chaired by the Patron-in-Chief of PJBF, Hiroshi Inomata, the Ambassador of Japan. It was also attended by the Consul General of Japan in Karachi, Akira Ouchi.

The Chairman, Sohail. P Ahmed welcomed the participants and provided a report on PJBF activities during 2013-14. The Patron-in-Chief, Mr Hiroshi Inomata, in his capacity as the Ambassador of Japan, assured his full cooperation to the PJBF in meeting its objective of linking the business communities of both countries to increase trade and investments and to help remove impediments in its way. He elaborated upon the potential that exists for business by the Pakistanis in Japan and vice-e-versa. He expressed his satisfaction on the progress made by the Forum.

Earlier, elections were held to elect the new board of directors from amongst the members of PJBF and the results were announced. In accordance with the earlier pattern, 20 members were elected, 10 each from amongst the Japanese and 10 from the Pakistani members. The members elected from the Pakistan side are Kalim Farooqui, Shahid Hussain, Sohail P.Ahmed, Mohsin Khawaja, Jameel Hussain, Feroze Shah, Irfan Vazeer, Zahid Saeed, Hamza Bin Tariq and Ayaz Thaver while the Japanese members are Shunichi Katagiri, Kimihide Ando, Kimihiro Ushimaru, Yoshiyuki Motomura, Yasunori Mizuno, Keiichiro Utsumi, Hisao Kobayashi, Kazuhiro Abe, Tsuyoshi Izumi and Keiichi Murakami.

The annual general meeting was followed by a musical programme and dinner. Those attending included presidents and chairmen of other bilateral forums, members of the diplomatic corps and city elite comprising businessmen, industrialists, educationists, journalists and the creme of society.
