MQM says Rangers arrested 16 workers from Iftar Party

Personnel of Paramilitary force rounded up at least 16 workers of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and said citizens are quite fed up of those taking extortion money in the name of “Fitra”.

The Rangers said the arrested political workers will be produced before Court today.

Reacting to the arrests, the MQM’s Coordination Committee issued an overnight press release saying that Zakat and Fitra is being declared as extortion money.

Muttahida’s main decision making body raised question, “Under which law, the collection of Zakat and Fitra for welfare works is a crime? The services and welfare activities of Khidmat-e-Khalq Foundation (KKF), a charitable organization run by MQM are afoot by dint of these donations.”

Arrest of the workers is an attempt to hamper the efforts of welfare activities, the MQM said adding the workers recently arrested by the paratroopers were sitting at sector office in Gulbahar.

These MQM workers were arrested while they were attending an Iftar Party, the MQM said and pleaded with Army Chief General Raheel Sharif to take notice of these arrests.

The Rangers said at least a thousand Fitra receipts and cash worth Rs.31,500 were recovered during the action and voiced their resolve that they will not let any party to forcibly collect Fitra and Zakat.

The Rangers spokesman appealed to the citizens to inform any attempt of forced collection of Zakat and Fitra on Helpline 1101.
