"Pakistan's First Smoke-free Health University"

KARACHI: The Federal Ministry of National Health Services has declared Dow University of Health Sciences as the first "Smoke-Free Health University" in Pakistan. On Tuesday, the Director of Tobacco Control Program, Ministry of National Health Services, Dr. Samra Mazhar visited the Dow University of health sciences along with her team. is one of the largest medical universities in the country. Students can be encouraged to conduct research on various topics including increasing smoking trends with the help and grant of the Higher Education Commission. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nusrat Shah said that the Ojha Institute of Chest Diseases can provide accurate data for research on the harmful effects of cigarettes. She said that the university is a tobacco-free zone but, a smoking control program should be initiated from the school level. Students start smoking during their exams due to the higher stress and later get stuck in this quagmire and it becomes difficult for them to quit smoking. Additional Commissioner Karachi Abid Qamar said that the whole country should be a smoke-free zone but the results of cigarette control in the South and East Districts of Karachi are much more encouraging. Registrar Dow University Dr. Asher Afaq said that the deadly effects of smoking appear later but in the first stage it destroys the health of the mouth. On the occasion, Prof. Nusrat Shah Pro-VC presented a commemorative shield to Dr. Samra Mazhar, Dr. Khurram Hashmi, and Additional Commissioner Karachi Abid Qamar, later on, Dr. Samra Mazhar inaugurated the university by cutting the ribbon in front of the plaque declaring it "smoke-free".
