Seven Scientists From ICCBS-UoK Included In Stanford University’s Global Scientists' List

KARACHI – Among 81 Pakistani scientists figured in the list of the world’s top two percent scientists in a global list issued by the United States’ Stanford University, seven are merely associated with International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) from overall nine scientists are from the University of Karachi.

The spokesman of the ICCBS-University of Karachi said on Tuesday that the names of the scientists from ICCBS included Prof. Dr. Iqbal Choudhary, Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman, Prof. Dr. Khalid M Khan, Prof. Dr. Darakhshan Jabeen Haleen, Prof. Dr. Viqar Uddin Ahmed, Prof. Dr. Bina Shaheen Siddiqui, and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah. However, two scientists are from the University of Karachi, including Prof. Dr. Ajmal Khan and Najeeb Alam Khan.

Senior professor of the ICCBS Dr. Khalid M Khan said that there were over 7.8 million people are publishing in science and technology globally. Out of the two percent were selected on the basis of their impact in their fields and accelerated the growth of knowledge, he added.

Only 81 are from Pakistan versus 1,494 from India, he said, adding that the sad part of the story is that this showed a dismal state of affairs and downslide of the Higher Education and science & technology sectors.

On the positive side Prof. Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman and Prof. Dr. Iqbal Choudhary are in the first 100,000 (top one percent), out of 7.8 million, he said. We hope that our young generation will do even better, he observed.

It is pertinent to mention here, according to media reports, the global list, compiled by Prof John Ioannidis and his team, carries the names of 159,683 people from all scientific disciplines. All these authors have been selected on the basis of an international evaluation of their research papers and classified based on career-long citation impact until the end of 2019 as well as for their citation impact in a single year (2019).
