SSGC cracks down on gas thieves; 2,100 cases detected

Karachi 11 April:   SSGC has launched a major crackdown against persons involved in gas theft by intensifying raids in major cities in its franchise areas of Sindh and Balochistan, for the greater objective of reducing Unaccounted-for-Gas (UFG).   Some 2,100 gas theft cases have been detected and FIRs have been lodged against the gas thieves.

Dedicated teams from different departments undertook systematic raids in different localities in Karachi, Quetta, Hyderabad and Sukkur where individuals were found involved in direct use of gas, tampering with distribution lines and using unauthorized extensions from distribution mains and services.

Total volume of 2100 theft cases has been estimated at 129,456 MCF.  Out of 2,100 theft cases detected, 2,098 were domestic cases.   In Karachi alone, some 2,012 domestic customers in Mehran Town (Korangi), Gizri Colony and Sharifabad were found engaged in gas theft through various means during these raids.

It must be mentioned here that an in-house committee on gas theft control has been formed by the SSGC management which reports directly to the Managing Director who holds regular follow-up on gas theft control activities.  The purpose of this committee is to also regularly monitor progress of various activities related to gas theft control and UFG and review the decisions related to technical and non-technical aspects of the issues taken during previous meetings.  Additional raiding teams have also been formed to control gas theft.  The main purpose behind these measures is to speed up actions being taken to control theft.
